FURNITURE
Fulham Greyhound
A MONOCHROME Set. Visually, Furniture are about as colourful as Bermondsey.
For those of you fortunate enough never to have encountered this South London borough, it's grey, flat and in urgent need of redevelopment, a description that can equally be applied to this lifeless sextet.
They just aren't playing the game. How are the Big Boys expected to get excited over an outfit that makes no attempt whatsover when it comes to visual presentation.
Their cause is further hindered by a patchy musical execution to say the very least. The singer's 'where have I heard that voice before' vocals are weedy enough to warrant a liberal dosage of paraquat and detract from interesting lyrics.
And yet, concealed in the dense undergrowth of this insipid performance, there are a couple areas in which Furniture all but shine.
The drummer manages to struggle to the surface of the quagmire, displaying a versatile and inventive range of rhythms, but then again it seems there are hundreds of good drummers around.
And the bare bones of the songs have an original feel to them, although an X-ray vision would be an invaluable asset in getting to their heart through the feeble body of the overall sound.
